Grayton Beach is an island unto itself. It’s a place where beach shacks reside perfectly next door to multi-million dollar homes. A place full of people who have “made it” but couldn’t give a flip whether anyone knows it. A place where you can take your 4 wheel drive (permitted!) vehicle down on the beach to watch a sunset on a crisp winter evening— or spend the whole day on a lazy, warm, some kind of wonderful, summer day. Grayton Beach is a celebrity hideaway and at the same time home to locals who like to keep it real, you never know who you might run into.
“GRAYTON BEACH, Fla. – It’s where barefoot hippies meet Burberry-clad yuppies, biker babes hang with beach bums and haute cuisine is served with a side of bluegrass.”
By MELISSA NELSON, Associated Press Writer
Grayton Beach is home to one of the South Walton’s prized coastal dune lakes – a rarity in the world. The lake is extremely popular with families who want to enjoy the beach while the little ones play safely in the shallow and undertow free water. Canoe, kayak or yolo all the way to WaterColor. And watch out when the lake breaks through to the gulf – rapids at the beach! For a true glimpse into the beauty of the coastal dune lakes, take a look at www.coastaldunelakes.org
Grayton Beach was the first community established in South Walton, sometime in the late 19th century. Some of the original houses still remain! The old Grayton Store (now The Red Bar) was the center of the community. By day it was the place to buy food, drinks and bait and by night it was full of music, dancing and laughter. Local children painted their names on the walls in bright colors, year after year. The old days are gone but the sense of community still remains. To know Grayton Beach, truly, is to love Grayton Beach.
